NIU football canceled after player shot

April 7, 2011 (DEKALB, Ill.)

The junior linebacker remains hospitalized in critical condition. He was shot Tuesday night off campus while at a friend's home. Police say the bullet was fired from a vehicle and went through the window of the apartment, striking Butler.

NIU football coach Dave Doeren released a statement, "All our thoughts and prayers as a team and as a coaching staff right now are with Devon."

Police said there had been a bad drug deal earlier in the day at the apartment and stress Butler was not involved.

Two men have been charged. Mark Orozco, 24, and Richard Van Arsdale, 20, face several charges including attempted first-degree murder.

Butler is from Pembroke Pines, Fla. He was in on 80 tackles and had 4 1/2 sacks.
