Police: Man shot after he pulled gun on officers

April 9, 2011 (CHICAGO)

Police say they responded to a call of shots fired near 82nd Street and Cottage Grove at approximately 11 p.m. Friday. They say they saw a man try to hide something under his jacket. When officers approached him, he reportedly took off.

"As he's running, he pulls out a rifle or a sawed-off shotgun and is putting the officer is position where he had no choice but to shoot him," said Pat Camden, spokesperson for the Fraternal Order of Police. "He was hit in the legs and dropped the weapon. A weapon has been recovered."

The person who was shot was taken to Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn.

The Independent Police Review Authority is investigating.
