Defendant Rana unlikely to testify

June 1, 2011 (CHICAGO)

Tahawwur Rana attorney Patrick Blegen was asked by U.S. District Judge Harry Leinenweber Wednesday morning before trial resumed.

Prosecutors briefly questioned a half dozen witnesses Wednesday, including FBI agents, and said they will have another witness appear Monday before turning the case over to the defense.

Rana is accused of helping his boyhood friend and admitted terrorist David Coleman Headley conduct surveillance in Mumbai and Denmark for planned attacks by Pakistan's terror organization, Lakshar-e-Taiba.

As part of his plea agreement, Headley testified against Rana, saying his friend let him use his immigration business as a cover.

On Thursday, jurors will likely receive deliberation instructions and may get the case as early as Tuesday.
