Madigan working to increase care for rape survivors

October 19, 2011 (CHICAGO)

Madigan said Wednesday she is partnering with the Illinois Hospital Association to try to have at least one such program operating around-the-clock in each of Illinois' 11 trauma regions.

Madigan also wants to double the number of sexual assault nurse examiners, who are called SANEs.

"SANEs are trained, not only to properly collect physical evidence, but they are also trained to respond to the psychological needs of a survivor," Madigan said.

Madigan said compassionate nurses make it easier for traumatized victims to seek treatment and report rapes, and they can give expert medical testimony at trials of rape suspects.
