Scientists find glutens in unlikely places

November 1, 2011

Researchers say gluten may be unknowingly found in lip, facial or body products.

Gluten is a protein found in wheat, rye and barley and damages the intestines of people with celiac disease.

George Washington University researchers looked at products from the top 10 cosmetic companies in the US and found only two of the companies offered detailed information. None of the companies offered gluten free products.

Scientists say the findings are alarming because gluten containing cosmetics can result in an exacerbation of celiac disease.
