Police in Portage say the boy told the staff at Central Elementary School in Portage that he missed class the day before because he could not wake his mother.
Portage police went to the boy's home where 31-year old Mandi Howerton lives.
They say she told them she had been smoking synthetic marijuana and they found a 2-year-old child who had been left in Howerton's care.
Howerton is charged with child neglect and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Child Protective Services is also investigating.
