A man died Monday after falling into an icy lake in south suburban Homewood.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office confirmed the death of 59-year-old William Kasper of Homewood.

Police say the Homewood Fire Department responded to Izaak Walton Nature Preserve located near 1100 W. Ridge Road after receiving a call of a person who fell through the ice at the small lake there. Firefighters saw a hat, cane and clothing near an opening in the ice, police say, and a loose dog nearby.

Police tried to resuscitate the unconscious victim before transporting him to Ingalls Hospital in Harvey.

Witness Dustin Neuliep of Chicago Heights says he called 911 after seeing two dogs wandering around -- one on a trail and one on the ice. He then spotted the dogs' leashes and a cane on the ice

Neuliep says he was able to get the dog to leave the ice. Both of the victim's dogs were taken by firefighters.
