GOP ramps up IL campaigns

March 12, 2012 (CHICAGO)

The Illinois Primary election is a week away on Tuesday, March 20.

Sixty-nine delegates are up for grabs. Republican voters directly elect 54 of them; another 12 will be selected at the state GOP convention in June; and the last three are state republican party officials.

GOP contenders are ramping up their political ads and visits in Illinois.

This week, Newt Gingrich is holding a rally on Wednesday at the Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, followed by fundraisers in Barrington Hills and Palatine. Rick Santorum holds a rally at North Ridge Prep in Niles Friday night and makes several campaign stops over the weekend downstate.

Mitt Romney doesn't have any Illinois campaign visits until next Monday with an event in Peoria. He'll be in Chicago for Election Day next Tuesday morning and then wrap-up the day in Wheaton.
