State Rep. Derrick Smith free on bond

He had no comment as he rushed from the federal building after a court appearance Saturday.

Prosecutors say a campaign worker recorded Smith taking a bribe to help a daycare center.

According to the criminal complaint, Smith used state stationary to request a $50,000 state grant for the center and he accepted $7,000 in exchange.

Smith's primary opponent, Tom Swiss, has called on Democratic party leaders to reject Smith.

A group of West Side politicians held a rally Sunday in support of his re-election.

Some said they're worried that a man who's really a republican could win in the overwhelmingly Democratic district.
