Recipients are told they have won a $1,000 Best Buy or Wal-Mart gift card. They are then directed to a website.
The Better Business Bureau calls this "smishing" because the scammers are using a text message as a way to collect someone's credit card or personal information.
The bureau says you should check a website closely before you give out any information.
