Helium shortage shrinks Libertyville Days Parade

June 13, 2012 (LIBERTYVILLE, Ill.)

The annual Libertyville Days Parade usually has eight or nine balloons. But ABC7 News partner The Daily Herald reports only three will be floating this year.

Libertyville Mayor Terry Weppler tells the paper it is difficult to get helium from their regular sources. Those companies are not able to secure as much because demand for helium is growing and the cost has increased.

Helium is unearthed as part of the natural gas extraction process.
