Chicago-area memorials mark 9/11 anniversary

September 11, 2012 (CHICAGO)

The Chicago Fire Department planned to observe a moment of silence at each station. The Fire Department of New York truck that carried 11 fallen firefighters on that morning has been touring the country as part of the Remembrance Rescue Project and will be in suburban Grayslake today.

Naperville will remember 9/11 victim Cmdr. Dan Shanower at its memorial Tuesday.

Tuesday morning, Chicago firefighters at Engine 18 on the Near West Side marked the moment the first plane struck the World Trade Center 11 years ago with a salute and a moment of silence.

Flags across the area are also flying at half-staff in honor of the civilians, police and firefighters who died on Sept. 11, 2001.
