Autopsy shows Oak Forest woman killed by strangulation, not fire

December 19, 2012 (OAK FOREST, Ill.)

Police identified the victim as 40-year-old Erica Rodriguez.

  • UPDATE FROM OAK FOREST POLICE: "Autopsy results on victim Erica Rodriguez have determined that she died as a result of strangulation and not as a result of the fire. Erica Rodriguez's death has been ruled a HOMICIDE. The Oak Forest Police and Fire Departments, the South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force and the State Fire Marshall's office are conducting a joint investigation into this incident. In addition, the cause of the fire has still not been determined."

Erica's husband, Martin Rodriguez, 48, was taken to Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn in critical condition, according to police. He is suffering from severe burns and cuts to his throat.

Three children who live in the home were in school at the time.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

MORE FROM OAK FOREST POLICE: The family and friends of Erica Rodriguez and the Oak Forest Police Department are announcing that a fund has been established to aid the family. In addition, new clothes and toys are being accepted at the Oak Forest Police Department for the children.
