Aurora policemen honored for saving boys on Illinois River

August 13, 2013 (AURORA, Ill.)

On June 28th, a 10-year-old boy and his father were rafting on the Vermillion River southwest of Aurora when they got stuck in a dam. Four boys in another raft came upon them and tried to help.

The 10-year-old got into the raft with the other boys. That helped dislodge the raft with his father, but then the boys needed rescuing, which is where Sergeants Dan Eppard and Rick Ahlgren come in.

They were off duty and saw the boys in trouble. They beached their kayak, threw a rope to the youngsters and pulled them to safety.
