Yellow Line service restored after fire near Dempster station

February 18, 2014 (SKOKIE, Ill.)

Service was temporarily suspended on the line between Howard and Skokie about 2:40 p.m. because of a track fire near Dempster, CTA officials said. All trains were parked at the station at the time and all passengers were able to exit the train.

Customers were encouraged to take the No. 97 Skokie bus as an alternative, CTA spokeswoman Catherine Hosinski said.

A few hours earlier, riders experienced delays after a CTA employee was injured while working near the Oakton Yellow Line station.

The employee was working on the northbound tracks about two blocks north of the Oakton station just after 11 a.m. when his shovel touched the electrified third rail, Hosinski said.

The Chicago Fire Department took the employee to a hospital in fair-to-serious condition, according to Fire Media.

Hosinski said the employee was "conscious, breathing and talking."
