CHICAGO (WLS) -- A busted passenger side window details the efforts by thieves who, police said, broke into a work van on North State Parkway and Burton Place in the Gold Coast early Saturday morning.
A violent scene later unfolded at Lake Shore Drive near Chicago Avenue, ending with two police officers injured and a suspect still on the loose.
A crew towed the work van that was broken into away on Saturday afternoon.
ABC Plumbing, the company that owns the vehicle, told ABC7 it was a take-home van and that the employee was not hurt or around during the burglary.
ABC7 was there when the work vehicle was towed away, but the concern for neighbors remained.
One man, who only wanted to be named "P.K.," lives on the block where police were investigating for hours.
"It's a sad turn of events for the city," he said. "It was a truck broken into in front of the house here, so it's kind of sad that you can't park on the street without being broken into."
Chicago police said they later stopped a black car, which was connected to the break-in, on Lake Shore Drive just before 8 a.m.
Police said as the driver was being taken into custody, an unknown passenger got in the driver's seat and took off, hitting two officers before escaping.
Police said both officers were treated for non-life-threatening injuries and have since been released. Charges are pending for one suspect as police work to find the other.
