Tips

  • Purge & Sort:

  • Label three boxes: "to keep," "to give away," and "not sure." Then, empty out all cabinets, drawers, and shelves. Assign each item to a box, keeping only what you need or love.
  • Tiny Tackles:

  • Don't overwhelm yourself. Tackle a small area for a little while each day.
  • Donate:

  • Do some research and find an organization you like. You may be parting with certain items, but they will go to someone who needs them.

    More on GETTING ORGANIZED

    (press release)

NORTHBROOK, IL (December 2007) – Are the messy rooms and disorganized closets in your home adding unnecessary hassle to your already hectic life? Did your last attempt at organizing fail? Maybe you weren't sure where to start. Perhaps you didn't want to part with anything.

Karen Serra, founder of Kare 'N Organize, Chicagoland's premier organization company servicing Chicago and the surrounding suburbs, offers the following organization tips to help solve your biggest clutter challenges.

WHAT TO KEEP and WHAT TO CUT

  • Is It Past Its Prime? If you even hesitated, it's to-go time. Milk and meds aren't the only things with expiration dates!
  • When Was The Last Time It Was Used? If you don't use it, lose it.
  • Is It One Of Many? There's no need for multiples. Do you really need two books with the same title? Enough said.
  • Is It One Of Not So Many? Do you find yourself saving single socks, hoping one day you'll find the match? What about napkins or silverware that don't get used because you only have one or two of a kind? No need to continue wasting space.
  • Would You Buy It Today? If you said no, you probably don't need it.
  • Donate: Do some research and find an organization you like. You may be parting with certain items, but they will go to someone who needs them.

    ABOUT KAREN SERRA:
After numerous requests to help friends, family and neighbors get organized, Karen decided it was time to turn her skill into a career. In 2006, she launched Kare 'N Organize, specializing in home and office organization.

Karen spends a great deal of time getting to know her clients needs and lifestyles. As a mother of two (three if you include her yellow lab, Rocky), Karen knows how difficult it can be to find the time to get and stay organized.

In addition to Kare 'N Organize, Karen enjoys spending time with her family, cooking, shopping, traveling and reading.
