Hands free cell phones are touted as being safer for drives, but a new brain imaging study is casting doubt on that claim.Just the act of listening appears to divert the brain enough to cause an accident, according to researchers.

So what about listening to the radio?

Researchers say that does not require the cognitive processing necessary for having a conversation and can be more readily tuned out.

The study in the journal "Brain Research" implies that drivers need to keep not just their hands on the wheel, but also keep their brains focused on the road.
