Backpack warning for adults

More warnings about backpacks, this time for adults: a new study finds wearing heavy backpacks can significantly decrease blood flow through your shoulder down to your fingertips. That could result in the loss of some fine motor skills as well as cause fatigue, according to a study presented at the American Physiological Society meeting in San Diego.

The study found adults wearing backpacks with loads of 26 pounds for just 10 minutes experienced an almost 50 percent decrease in blood flow through large and small vessels in their upper bodies.

Authors are now calling for a redesign of backpack straps.
