Crews cleanup lakefront beaches

CHICAGO Chicago Park District crews are combing area beaches and collecting debris.

According to the Alliance for the Great Lakes, the litter found on beaches is mostly made up of smoking paraphernalia. Smoking is banned on Chicago's beaches.

The Breakdown of Beach Debris

  • 54-percent: cigarette filters, lighters; cigar tips; tobacco product packaging
  • 29-percent: Food wrappers, containers, cans, cups, etc...
  • 17-percent: Other

    The lakefront beaches open for the season this weekend.

    Lifeguards are on duty between Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends.
