Suburban residents remember veterans

Navy recruits joined several community organizations as they placed wreaths at the Norridge Veterans Memorial.

Village President Earl Field said the ceremony was an opportunity to thank all service members and to remember those who have given their lives for the United States. He encouraged people to think of the men and women in uniform not just during the Memorial Day holiday but all year round.

In Alsip, those who gave their lives for America were remembered during a service at VFW Post 450.

State Director of Veterans Affairs Tammy Duckworth attended the ceremony and told the crowd assembled that while they remember those who did not make it home, they should renew their commitment to care for those who did.

Duckworth says there are at least 1.2 million veterans living in Illinois.
