Tax rebates aid retail spending in May

It looks like consumers stepped up their shopping in May after tax rebate checks hit mailboxes.Many of the nation's retailers report stronger than expected sales for the month.

Still, there were signs that many people are still focusing on necessities, such as food and gas.

Analysts say discount and lower-priced stores, such as Cost-Co and Wal-Mart, were among the strongest performers.

Many mall-based apparel retailers are also reporting results above expectations.
