City of Chicago officials are asking residents to 'be safe at home,' which means safely disposing of items like old electronic products, chemicals and paints. The city invited people to drop off those items Saturday at Northeastern Illinois University. In return, participating residents went home with a new compact fluorescent light bulb. They also had a chance to purchase a compost bin or rain barrel.

The event was sponsored by the city's Department of Environment and the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency.
