Homeless man accused of attacking Ind. police

The attack happened Friday afternoon in Hammond. Police say Ira Washington flagged down an officer then lunged at him as he stepped out of his car.

Corporal Tom Sawyer suffered head injuries after Washington allegedly beat him unconscious. He is expected to recover.

Police say a second off-duty officer suffered a minor shoulder injury as he subdued the attacker.

Washington is charged with attempted murder and battery.
