One dead, officer injured in shooting

SKOKIE It started after a bank was robbed Monday evening in Northbrook. It ended with a chase and shootout on the streets of Lincolnwood.

The bullet-riddled police car tells much of the story of a shootout on a quiet residential street in Lincolnwood. Neighbors say they heard more than a dozen rounds as the Skokie officer and an alleged bank robber exchanged gunfire.

The robbery started at the Fifth Third Bank, then the suspect fled.

Neighbors say it was like a scene from a movie, but once the shooting stopped, the suspect was hit by real bullets. He died at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston. The officer was also injured but not seriously.

"We heard screeching vehicles that came to a halt. All you heard was a round of gunshots going off, then another round," said witness Tony Kalogerakos.

Police say the chase lasted just a matter of seconds. Backup patrols arrived quickly, but by then it was already over. Police say they recovered two handguns and a bag of cash from the suspect's car. They were not releasing his name Monday night but say if he is who they believe, he had an extensive criminal record.
