People who stick to a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, olive oil and fish tend to receive substantial protection against cancer, heart disease and other major chronic illnesses. This is the finding of a new review combining 12 studies with more than one and a half million participants.

The results in the British Medical Journal online showed a clear pattern: the better people stuck to the Mediterranean diet, the greater their health benefits.

Researchers believe this report is clinically relevant for public health and should help encourage more people to adopt this diet for the prevention of chronic diseases.
