Criminal attorney maintains success as musician

In his spare time, he's become quite accomplished, playing alongside some musical greats.

For over 30 years, criminal attorney Roman has been servicing this 100-year-old community. Born in Mexico, he came to Chicago when he was only a year old.

"I wanted to give something back to the community to encourage young people, whether it was a legal or medical career like my father," said Roman.

This attorney by day is a well-known Chicago musician at night and on the weekends. He leads of a 15-piece band called The Tellstars, which has played backup for Jose Feliciano, Los Lobos and Jose Chipito Areas at Viva Chicago, the Latin jazz festival and throughout Chicago.

"Music has always been my passion. And in this great country, you can be anything you want to be," Roman said.

The guitarist has also performed with his idol and friend Carlos Santana in San Francisco and in Chicago.

"One of my dreams was to play with Santana, and it came true," Roman.

Over the years, Roman has released a number of CDs and has performed for and befriended political leaders and community activists throughout the country. He also worked on the campaigns of the late Mayor Harold Washington, Mayor Richard Daley and presidential candidate Walter Mondale.

"Music opens doors for me. And when I need to have a door open, and it's also become obvious that one profession complements the other," Roman said.

Roman and his company Tellstar Productions have produced anti-drug films using music and humor to encourage young people to stay in school and off drugs.
