Congressional candidates talk Social Security

CHICAGO Democratic Congresswoman Melissa bean, seeking a third term, faces Republican Steve Greenberg.

The league of women voters sponsored their debate at a Schaumburg retirement village. The first question concerned social security, and whether to privatize it.

"Given the economic crisis we're facing, and what we just saw happen in Wall Street, what would we do with those who had opted out if this type of crisis happened upon them when they were ready to draw checks? We would have to step in and help. So it's not Social Security. That would be social insecurity," said Rep. Melissa Bean, (D) 8th district.

"The privatization in Social Security should start with the generation below. I believe that still corporations are good, and the free market is a positive. And you'll make more money in the Iong run by investing it yourself versus the government," said Steve Greenberg, 8th District nominee for Congress.

The 8th district covers parts of Cook, Lake, and McHenry counties.
