The Illinois Tollway Board gave the go ahead to a plan for high-occupancy toll lanes. The plan is to install the "green lanes" on areas of Chicago-area tollways where traffic is heaviest. The conversion begins in 2010.

One lane at toll plazas would be reserved for buses and share-riders, who would pay the normal toll.

People who drive alone or use environmentally friendly hybrids can also use the lane but must pay an extra charge.

Rates for using the high-occupancy toll lanes have not been set.
