2 North Side parishioners killed in crash

CHICAGO They were driving in DeKalb Monday afternoon when their car crossed into oncoming traffic and slammed into the truck.

Sara "Pat" Conway and Mary Heidkamp were both 70 years old. They lived at Saint Gertrude Parish, 1420 W. Granville, in the Edgewater neighborhood.

Two other women who are also members of the parish were injured in the crash and had to be flown by helicopter to a Rockford hospital.

Members of the Saint Gertrude community are devastated.

"They're what you call the pillars of a parish. They were involved in everything. They and their families had been in the parish and the school for generations. You would find Mary and Pat every morning praying the rosary in church," said Rev. Dominic Grassi, St. Gertrude Parish.

Funerals for both women are planned for the end of this week.
