Watchdog group releases 'Pig Book'

April 14, 2009 (WASHINGTON) On the day before Tax Day, a watchdog group released a report that they say shows billions of dollars are being wasted on pork projects.

Citizens Against Government Waste charge members of Congress stuffed more than 10,000 pork projects into the 2009 budget. The total- $19.6 billion, an increase of 14-percent since 2008.

The group labels some of the most glaring projects:

  • $3.8 million for the old Tiger Stadium Conservancy in Detroit
  • $1.9 million for the Pleasure Beach Water Taxi Service in Connecticut
  • $1.8 million for swine odor and manure management in Ames, Iowa
  • The report also points out some pork projects in Illinois, including one that made headlines during the presidential campaign. The Adler Planetarium is getting $900,000 for new equipment.

Republican nominee John McCain called it an "overhead projector."

The report says this money is just 3 percent of the $31 million cost to update the 78-year-old domed sky theater auditorium.
