Chrysler laying off 1,000 in Belvidere

May 20, 2009 (BELVIDERE, Ill.) The plant is being turned into a one-shift operation.

The 992 workers losing their positions will go on an indefinite layoff on July 27.

The plant has been idle since Chrysler filed for bankruptcy protection at the end of April. It temporarily stopped production because of a back log of inventory.
