The federal minimum wage rises to $7.25 an hour beginning Friday, a 70 cent increase over the current rate. Labor Secretary Hilda Solis says it will help workers better provide for their families during this recession, but some economists believe it could force small businesses to lay off the workers that the wage increase was meant to help.

Illinois has its own minimum wage, which is higher than the federal rate. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, where federal and state law differs, the higher rate applies.
