Benefit for hit-and-run victim

August 8, 2009 (CHICAGO) The victim, Joe Penkala, is in intensive care at Northwestern Memorial Hospital with severe head trauma. The fundraiser at the Underpass Bar in Franklin Park was meant to help him and his family.

Volunteers organized a raffle and urged people to make donations on Penkala's behalf.

Penkala and seven friends from the western suburbs were involved in a hit-and-run crash Saturday, August 1. Stephanie Herrera, 19, died. Police say their car was run off the road in a case of mistaken identity.

Shalimar Santiago was driving the car that caused the crash. Authorities say he thought he was hitting people who opened fire on his friend.

Santiago is charged with first degree murder.
