Demolition of Harold Ickes Homes under way

August 27, 2009 (CHICAGO) Thursday, wrecking crews started demolishing six of the 11 buildings at the Harold Ickes Homes, 2222 S. State St., on the City's South Side.

The Chicago Housing Authority closed those buildings due to high vacancies and security concerns. At its peak, more than 1,000 families lived in the high-rises. Today, only 79 families remain.

The agency plans to redevelop the site.
