Demolition on Michael Reese site to begin

October 21, 2009 (CHICAGO) The city bought the 37-acre property and planned to build the Olympic village there if Chicago got the 2016 Games.

On Wednesday, city officials say the demolition is the first step toward building mixed-income housing there.

Under the current plans, the original main hospital and singer pavilion would be left standing.

Some alderman had suggested a casino could be built on the property. But Mayor Daley opposes that idea.
