Powerful jobs could cause harmful stress

October 27, 2009 Researchers are finding that while a power position at work may mean higher pay and more engaging work, the stress could cancel out the benefits.

They analyzed data on some 1,800 U.S. workers, and many in the big boss category reported conflicts with coworkers and complained the job intruded on the home life.

Researchers say those issues alone were enough to chip away at physical and mental well-being, creating chronic stress.

The research appears in the journal Social Science and Medicine.
