November 7, 2009 (CHICAGO) A big crowd attended a fundraiser for the University of Illinois Medical Center's Walter Payton Liver Center and the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine. Both are doing research and trying to find a cure for the disease that killed one of the greatest running backs in football history.
"He continues to be an inspiration to both aspiring and seasoned athletes alike. His 'Sweetness' persona remains a gentle reminder to everyone to always treat others with respect and kindness," said Brittney Payton, Walter Payton's daughter.
Brittney Payton also announced that a goal has been set to find a cure for liver cancer by the year 2020.
