Local groups celebrate first day of Kwanzaa

December 26, 2009 (CHICAGO) Each day of Kwanzaa stands for one principal. Saturday's was unity. Several organizations in Chicago marked the start of the observance Saturday.

Malcolm X College and the Bolozi Wazee hosted the 15th Annual Kwanzaa Observance Program.

The free event is billed as the largest seven-day celebration of Kwanzaa in the country.

A variety of performers are taking part in the celebration.

On Saturday night, the Austin African American Business Network held its Seventh Annual Kwanzaa Gala at the Sankofa Cultural Arts and Busines center.

The entertainment includes African drummers, dancers and poetry.

The celebration of African heritage and culture is observed from December 26 to January 1 every year and is marked by a candle lighting ceremony.
