Protesters march against CTA service cuts

January 20, 2010 (CHICAGO) They carried signs in front of CTA headquarters, 567 W. Lake. They are angry about service reductions set to begin February 7. The agency claims they are necessary because of lower-than-anticipated revenues.

Protestors argue the cuts are a product of what they call an unfair funding formula in Illinois.

"When you consider the fact that there's a million people a day at least riding it that says 190,000 people a day are gonna be stranded. That means the remaining people will wait longer and sit in overcrowded buses. It's unfair," said one marcher.

Inside CTA headquarters the transit authority board held a meeting to address the cuts. The CTA also reported ridership was down by 1 percent last year.
