The number of working teens is at a record low both nationwide and in Illinois, according to a report called "The Lost Decade for Teen and Young Adult Employment in Illinois" commissioned by the Alternative Schools Network. It found that the national teen employment rate fell 26.2 percent since 2000. And in Illinois, the teen employment rate fell 20 percent.

The study also found black teens and youth from low-income families fare worse than their more affluent counterparts.
