Chicagoans brave cold temps, snow for free lunch

Some hungry Chicago customers got a great deal Friday during a Groundhog Day promotion at South Water Kitchen, a restaurant in the Loop.According to manager David Friday, the Kitchen was running its fifth annual Groundhog Day promotion Tuesday, which offers customers the chance to eat lunch for free-- if they can stand to sit outside.

The restaurant, located near the corner of Wabash and Wacker, was offering three seating opportunities Tuesday at 11:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. Reservations were required.

Friday says the spots were all taken as early as 8:30 a.m.

In all, about 28 people were expected to enjoy lunch on the house Tuesday. is told South Water Kitchen will do it all again next Groundhog Day.
