Daley proposes new gun laws

While the U.S. Supreme Court considers whether to overturn Chicago's handgun ban, Mayor Daley is proposing new gun laws.

Daley has a number of proposals on the state level. They include making it a class one felony to knowingly sell or transfer a gun to a gang member. He also wants to increase the penalty for unlawful use of a weapon. On the federal level, he supports a reinstatement of the assault weapon ban.

"No one should be able to use weapons in the military in Iraq and Afghanistan against terrorists to be able to be used here in America...simple as that," said Daley.

The Illinois State Rifle Association opposes the measures saying they wouldn't reduce crime and would make it tougher for law abiding citizens to obtain guns.
