Obama backs Giannoulias for U.S. Senate

March 9, 2010 (WASHINGTON) President Obama greeted Giannoulias, the Democratic Senate nominee, at the White House Tuesday.

Giannoulias was there for a Greek Independence Day celebration. He will also meet with a fellow Chicagoan, presidential adviser David Axelrod, to discuss strategy for the Senate race.

It's expected to be a hard-fought battle between Giannoulias and the Republican nominee, North Shore Congressman Mark Kirk.

Kirk charges that the treasurer bears some responsibility for serious financial problems at the family-owned Broadway Bank, where Giannoulias had been an officer.
