Broadview man fatally shot by police

Chicago police opened fire on a suburban man after he allegedly pointed a gun at officers on Chicago's West Side. It happened Monday night near Hirsch and Mayfield in the Austin neighborhood. Officers were responding to reports of gunfire when they spotted the suspect.

During a brief chase, police say, the suspect pointed a gun at them, prompting police to shoot.

William J. Hardy, 27, of the 2000-block of S. 15th Ave., Broadview, was pronounced dead at 12:02 a.m. Tuesday at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office said.

Chicago police detectives and the Independent Police Review Authority are investigating.
