Ex-deacon accused of church fraud

A former deacon and business manager of a Roman Catholic church in West Chicago is accused of stealing more than $300,000 from the parish.

George Valdez was fired from St. Mary's Catholic Church last year. He's accused of issuing himself unauthorized fraudulent checks from church bank accounts and using a parish credit card for personal purchases.

Prosecutors say the scheme unraveled last summer after a routine audit was conducted.
