Notre Dame graduates first African-American valedictorian

April 16, 2010 (GARY, Ind.)

Katie Washington will be the first African-American valedictorian for the Fighting Irish. She has made straight A's through her entire school career.

Katie majored in biology. She was also valedictorian of her high school in 2006.

The Gary native credits her hometown for her success.

"I saw many things people may have never seen in their lives because of living in Gary -- but at the same time I had an amazing childhood," said Washington.

Though Katie will focus on becoming a doctor, her other interests include directing Notre Dame's gospel choir. She is also a jazz singer and has been on the swim team.

Katie also obeyed her mother, who told her, "You are representing your family, your church and the City of Gary -- make us proud."
