Bat attack victim comes out of coma

May 8, 2010 (CHICAGO)

McShane and her friend, Stacy Jurich, were attacked with a baseball bat last month in Chicago's Bucktown neighborhood.

Doctors caring for McShane also say her is improving. According the family's statement, the 23-year-old graduate student from Northern Ireland remains in serious condition.

Jurich was released from the hospital, and although she is in a wheelchair, she attended a benefit held Saturday night for both victims at Cans Bar and Canteen in the 1600-block of North Damen.

Some attendees said Jurich seemed upbeat.

"Well, I'm happy she's doing better. She looks fine. She looks great. She's in a wheelchair, I know that much. People are willing to donate. The neighborhood's come out in full support. So, that's a happy thing," said Humboldt Park Resident Wendy Dunlap.

Two suspects, Heriberto Viramontes and his girlfriend, Marcy Cruz, were charged with two counts each of armed robbery and aggravated battery in connection with the crime.
