Chicago Mayor Richard Daley has appointed a third-generation firefighter to be the city's new fire commissioner.

Robert Hoff joined the department in 1977 and has worked his way through the ranks. Most recently, he served as first deputy commissioner.

In making the appointment Wednesday, Daley called Hoff "an excellent administrator'" and "a great leader."

Hoff is one of just a few people to win the department's highest award for bravery two times.
