The Detroit-area automaker says existing Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram dealers can apply but must operate separate facilities with different sales and service teams in order to secure a franchise.
Fiat last sold cars in the US in the 1980s. It returns in December with the Fiat 500, an efficient small car.
The company expects to have 200 Fiat dealers in 41 states.
The U.S. government gave Fiat control of Chrysler when the automaker emerged from bankruptcy last summer.
